Proof of Presence: Crypto Startup Launches First Location-Based Token for Remote Landscapes
In a world-first fusion of geography and blockchain, Nordic startup GeoMint has launched Proof of Presence (PoP) — a location-bound cryptocurrency that can only be mined by physically visiting remote, untouched natural environments.
Unlike traditional tokens mined through computational power, PoP Tokens are minted when a user, carrying a special hardware wallet and GPS verifier, physically enters designated coordinates — such as glaciers, deserts, jungles, or uninhabited islands.
The aim? To incentivize human exploration and fund the protection of endangered landscapes using crypto.
How It Works:
-
Users carry a GeoMint-issued PoPBox, which uses GPS + zero-knowledge proofs to validate presence without revealing exact paths.
-
Tokens can only be minted at verified “GeoNodes” — places of ecological significance.
-
Each minted token is stamped with geographical metadata, which can later be linked to eco NFTs, conservation DAOs, or tourism initiatives.
Global Buzz:
-
Only 31 GeoNodes are active as of launch, including a site near the Arctic Circle, a Himalayan pass, and a volcanic crater in Chile.
-
Already, adventurers and crypto enthusiasts are racing to reach them, sparking a new trend called "eco-token hunting."
-
GeoMint has pledged 40% of token sale proceeds to conservation programs tied to each physical location.
"It’s Pokémon GO meets environmental activism, powered by blockchain," said Freyja Örnolfsdóttir, CEO of GeoMint.
This concept introduces a groundbreaking blend of real-world presence, digital scarcity, and ecological impact — a move toward geo-native crypto economies.
